Boudoir for
every body

By Andy Barker ·

“Is boudoir for someone like me?” is a question I hear in a dozen different forms. Someone like me might mean bigger, older, pregnant, male, recovering from something, or simply not a person who likes photos. The answer is always yes. This guide covers what changes for different bodies and, just as importantly, what never does.

Every body is a boudoir body

Boudoir is not a reward for reaching a certain size or age. It is a portrait of you as you are now, taken with care, in good light, by someone whose job is to find your best angles. The people who get the most out of a session are often the ones who were most sure it was not for them.

What makes that possible is not a special technique for each body type. It is time, patience and direction: trying a pose, looking at the back of the camera together, adjusting, and keeping what works. Here is how that plays out for the questions I am asked most.

Plus size boudoir

Curves are a gift in boudoir, because shape and light are what the whole style is built on. A few things help. Shooting from slightly above and turning the body a little away from the camera defines the waist and jaw. Creating a little space between your arms and your body shows your real shape. Lying and reclining poses let gravity do the work. Fabrics with some structure, like a good bodysuit, high-waisted briefs or a long shirt, give you something to play with.

Editing stays natural. I do not reshape bodies. Stretch marks, soft bellies and dimples stay in the frame unless you specifically ask for something to be softened, and even then, we talk about it first. The aim is that you look at the photos and see yourself, just more striking than you expected. For outfit ideas, see what to wear to a boudoir shoot.

Boudoir over 40 and over 50

Milestone birthdays are a classic reason to book. Turning 40, 50 or 60 has a way of prompting the question: if not now, when? Many people in their 40s and 50s also find they care far less about other people’s opinions than they did at 25, which makes for a relaxed, confident session.

Practically, soft directional light is kind to every face, and window light in a hotel suite or at home is ideal. Poses that lengthen the neck and bring the chin forward do more than any retouching. Laugh lines stay, because they are part of your story. If you have been thinking about it for a while, that is usually the sign. You can see how sessions work on the boudoir photography page.

Maternity boudoir

Pregnancy changes your body faster than at any other time, and maternity boudoir is a way of remembering it with tenderness rather than just a few blurry phone photos. Lingerie, an open shirt, a sheet draped around the bump, or your partner’s hands resting on it all work beautifully.

Comfort comes first. Sessions are paced with plenty of breaks, poses are supported by pillows, the bed or a chair, and nothing involves lying flat on your back for long. Many people choose a time in later pregnancy when the bump is clearly showing but moving around still feels comfortable, but the right timing is whatever works for you, and it is worth checking with your midwife if you have any concerns. If you would like your partner involved, a couples session might suit you better.

Male boudoir

Most boudoir clients are women, but men are welcome, and the process is exactly the same: a conversation first, gentle direction on the day, natural editing and a private gallery. Male boudoir, sometimes called dudoir, is often a gift for a partner, a milestone marker, or a record of hard work in the gym.

Outfits tend to be simple: fitted briefs or boxers, an open shirt, jeans with bare feet, a towel, or a sheet. Posing leans on strong lines and shadows, with seated and leaning poses that feel natural rather than modelled. Humour helps, and a good playlist helps even more.

After a big chapter

Some people book boudoir to mark something hard: after having children, after an illness, after a divorce, after a big change in weight, or simply after years of putting everyone else first. These sessions can be emotional in the best way. There is no pressure to explain your reasons, but if you do share them at the consultation, I can plan the session around what matters to you.

What stays the same for everyone

Whoever you are, a few things never change. You decide how much you show, and you can change your mind at any point. The session moves at your pace. You are guided through every pose and shown the back of the camera often. Your images are delivered to a private, password-protected gallery, and nothing is ever posted or used in marketing without your explicit written consent.

If you are still wondering whether boudoir is for you, the guide to what boudoir photography is is a good place to start. Or skip the reading and send me a message. I reply within one business day, and there is no obligation.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

Do you photograph plus size boudoir?

Yes. Every shape and size is welcome. Posing, light and angles are chosen for your body, and editing is natural, so you will recognise yourself in every frame.

Am I too old for a boudoir shoot?

No. There is no upper age for boudoir. Milestone birthdays in your 40s, 50s and beyond are a wonderful reason to book.

Can I have a maternity boudoir session?

Yes. Maternity boudoir is welcome, and the session is paced around your comfort, with plenty of breaks, supportive poses and a setting where you can rest.

Do you offer male boudoir?

Yes. Most sessions are solo women, but men are welcome. The process is the same: a consultation, relaxed direction, natural editing and a private gallery.

Will you edit out my stretch marks or scars?

Not unless you ask. Editing is natural by default: light and colour are polished, distractions are tidied, and the things that make your body yours stay put.
